Nitescence (Radiance)

Nitescence (Radiance)

Nitescence (Radiance) invites us to contemplate a landscape where light finds its way through a restless sky. Above a dark horizon, the clouds seem to part, hinting at a clearing. Below, an open expanse might suggest a shoreline at low tide or a field, while distant silhouettes evoke hills or dwellings. The landscape takes shape through each viewer’s impressions.

Within an almost monochromatic palette, a few touches of colour bring the subtle shades to life and give the light its full presence. Textured reliefs animate the sky, while the broader movements in the foreground offer a place for the gaze to rest. Between the intensity of the sky and the calm of the open expanse, the work prolongs the pleasure of pausing before a break in the clouds and watching the landscape change.

The Abstract Landscapes collection draws its inspiration from a fascination with landscapes encountered during travels through Quebec and British Columbia. A horizon, a particular light or the presence of a tree can make us want to stop. Painting extends that contemplation, revisiting what first caught the eye and exploring why certain forms resonate so deeply.

Memories mingle with colour and take shape in paint worked with a palette knife. Raised textures and marks created by rubbing across the surface suggest landscapes, trees or gardens, while leaving room for personal impressions. These works invite us, in turn, to discover what fascinates us and draws us into contemplation.
